HCL Connections Ideas Portal

Welcome to the HCL Connections Product Ideas Lab! The place where you can submit product ideas and enhancement request. We encourage you to participate by voting on, commenting on, and creating new ideas. All new ideas will be evaluated by the HCL Product Management & Engineering teams, and the next steps will be communicated. While not all submitted ideas will be executed upon, community feedback will play a key role in influencing which ideas are and when they will be implemented.

Completely remove all of the old stack from Connections by version 7.0

As a business partner, we find it hard to sell the current version of Connections because customer need to provide 2 kind of hardware (one for WAS and another for the Component Pack). In fact we have one customer who repeatedly delay their planned upgrade because :

  1. The recommended upgrade scenario is side-by-side and their current infrastructure consist of 7 VM.
  2. Extra hardware needed for the component pack

Since Sametime team has proven that it is possible to commit to removing everything related to WAS and DB2 in about a year, can the Connections team commit to do the same ? Having a clear timeline would greatly benefit both customer (they see a clear technical vision),  HCL (can prioritise development along that vision) and Business Partner (we can focus on the future stack).

Are there any updates regarding this plan?

first ... Connections is a GREAT PRODUCT.

But HCL should do the same thing they are doing now with HCL sametime v11. SIMPLIFY.

FEW partners will attempt to sell Connections if it depends on installing a stack of heterogeneous products (ibm-db2, ibm-websphere, ibm-http, ibm-cognos, tivoli, etc). This complexity is for initial installation, upgrades and daily administration.

NO customer will do a POC, or will try to install this product seeing its complexity, hardware requirements and technical skills.

We need them to simplify infrastructure and reduce the footprint.

Previously, we had the option of cloud (SaaS: zero work), now there is only the option onpremises (too complex)

Yes, this is the general direction we are headed towards. I will not commit here to the exact details or to be completely done by 7.0 but we are planning towards that goal. We will share the timeline and details as soon as they are committed.
