For community collaboration, the smart way to work is to share received mails too. Mail files are sometimes received as an EML file. EML file cannot be previewed in DOCS. EML file must be downloaded and cannot be previewed in Notes, but only in Outlook. If you do not have Outlook installed, the mail cannot be previewed. Preview for EML-files should be a standard.

A viewer/conversion registry would be a good idea, just like Alfresco did for example. But to have an integration of a 300 file format viewer as a service like snowbound would also be great, at least for non confidential content. So content classification would be a good step forward for allowing external viewing capabilities. Maybe classify whole communities as confidential then no external tools are available. For all others, users could enjoy the preview of nearly everything. But remember: there will be a file format out there that even that all-in viewer does not provide. For these, the initial idea of a previewer or conversion tool registry stays interesting. Autodesk viewers would be a good example of that. Rvt Files can not be viewed with snowbound, right?

or have the ability to register more files types with a command / script

having the ability to switch more types on and off would be great
